A Digital Approach To Ship-Helicopter Operations Clearance

Abstract

Clearance of helicopters to naval vessels is a complex, costly and at times hazardous process which could be significantly improved by application of Modelling and Simulation (M&S). Building on established capabilities for ship-air integration modelling, the authors present a new framework for generating digital evidence to support the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) ship air-release process. The framework applies independent fidelity assessment of both air and ship system models to build credibility of integrated simulations that may lack applicable validation data. The framework is developed to ensure outputs comply with RA 5812, the MoD and Military Aviation Authority's regulatory article governing use of M&S in airworthiness decision-making. To support compliance, specific fidelity metrics are proposed for key M&S based on existing literature and new experimental results that examine how variations in ship airwake characteristics affect helicopter deck landing performance. The framework is demonstrated using an initial case study involving the AW159 Wildcat and Type 23 frigate, which illustrates the approach and highlights fidelity sensitivities. Future work will refine and validate the M&S components to improve confidence in digital evidence for operational clearance decisions, and support qualification of future aircraft/ship pairings.
