| dc.description.abstract | The tiltrotor convertiplane concept has evolved over more than half a century from theoretical vision to operational reality and future promise. Raul Hafner's 1971 Cierva Memorial Lecture to the Royal Aeronautical Society summarizes very well how the convertible rotor could be the solution to the enduring limitations of both helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft: the former constrained by speed and range, the latter restricted by airport dependence and high terminal costs. British efforts under the Short Range Transport (SRT) programme produced advanced design studies, including the WE-01 demonstrator and WE-02/03 transport concepts, though none reached flight. The Leonardo AW609 now approaches certification as the world's first civil tiltrotor, bridging vertical access with turboprop-class speed and range. In parallel, the Next Generation Civil Tiltrotor (NGCTR) technology demonstrator within Clean Sky 2 advances sustainability through morphing structures, hybrid-ready propulsion, and noise abatement. This paper revisits the principles set forth by Hafner, reflecting on the convertiplane envisioned by Westland Helicopters to assess its relevance to today's air transportation landscape. It compares the technical features and performance of Hafner's proposed demonstrator with the current reality of the AW609 and the future potential represented by the NGCTR aircraft. In this work emphasis is given to the technologies available today that have allowed the tiltrotor concept to mature - technologies that were once considered major barriers in the 1960s. This paper compares the WE-01, AW609, and NGCTR across subsystems-structures, rotors, transmissions, powerplants, controls, and environmental performance-while examining socio-economic drivers, and certification challenges.
