dc.description.abstract The dangers of using vacuum arc remelted (VAR) steel for the drive trains of helicopters are described. The steel can contain serious cracks, and historical helicopter failures are listed. An equivalent material recommended for use is that produced by the electroslag remelting (ESR) process which is expected to be fundamentally free of major defects.
