Abstract
This study investigates the aerodynamic complexities of aerial screws, inspired by Leonardo da Vinci's visionary 16th-century designs. Through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis, the investigation unveils a vortex-based thrust mechanism analogous to vortex lift observed in swept and delta wings. The key 'da Vinci' vortex, a shape-conforming helical structure at the screw's tip, serves as a focal point for evaluating the influence of design variables on aerodynamic efficiency. Detailed analyses of screw pitch and taper reveal nuanced effects on thrust generation, offering valuable insights for optimizing aerial screw performance. This work provides a comprehensive understanding of historical roots and contemporary advancements in aerial screw technology, paving the way for efficient Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) alternatives.
