dc.description.abstractAutogyros-also known as gyroplanes or gyrocopters-preceded the invention of the helicopter, marking the begin- ning of the rotorcraft era. They feature an unpowered rotor that relies on autorotation and a separate power-plant that provides forward thrust. Autogyros are capable of short take-offs, near-vertical landings, and slow-speed cruising, while also being more cost-effective to manufacture and maintain compared to helicopters. Despite these advantages, their inability to hover limits their applicability in certain missions, particularly in emergency medical services (EMS), where helicopters are commonly used. However, the potential of autogyros in such roles has not been systematically evaluated. This study presents a preliminary feasibility analysis of using autogyros in Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS). It investigates operational limitations and identifies scenarios in which autogyros could serve as a viable alternative. By analysing real-world HEMS mission profiles and comparing them with current autogyro perfor- mance capabilities, the study estimates the proportion of missions that autogyros could realistically undertake.
